 Thesis Title: The Dynamic Relation between Stock Returns and Trading Volume of Colombo Stock Exchange

Doctor of Philosophy 

PhD research was based on forecasting share returns and the risk of the Sri Lankan stock market. The study began with Time Domain Analysis. The existing techniques; CAPM, VAR, ARCH/ GARCH, ARIMA, etc. were tested and unsuccessful in the Sri Lankan context. Then the Frequency Domain Approach was tested. Two new forecasting models, named; “Circular Model (CM)” and “Circular Indicator (CI)” for forecasting return and risk respectively were the outcome of the study. The most important feature of the CM is that the CM is capable of capturing both seasonal and cyclical patterns together.  The CM and CI can also be applied in the fields of, Agriculture, Meteorology, Medicine, Economics, and many more. Advanced Mathematical/ Statistical techniques and theories of Physics were extensively used in the study. The development of the CM was based on Fourier transformation and Multiple Regression analysis; the development of the CI was based on Newton’s laws of Circular motion.
